Maritime Archaeology: Franck Goddio

Exploring the past to understand the present

We support French archaeologist Franck Goddio, who is revolutionizing maritime archaeology with innovative research and documentation techniques.

Since 1996, we have been collaborating with Franck Goddio to support his research in Egypt. Over the years, it has been possible to advance maritime archaeology as a science and to rediscover fascinating sites that for centuries were considered lost. Sharing the results of this work with other professionals as well as the general public has become one of our main goals.

The evaluation and processing of Goddio’s findings are carried out in close cooperation with the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology (OCMA), a specialist research group within the Oxford School of Archaeology, founded in 2012 and supported by the Hilti Foundation.

FRANCK GODDIO

Tireless pioneer of underwater archaeology

Meticulous research enthusiasm and seemingly boundless energy are what makes Franck Goddio and his team successful. With the discovery of the legendary ‘Portus Magnus’ in Alexandria, Egypt as well as the two sunken cities of Heracleion and Canopus, he has gained groundbreaking insights into the late period of the Egyptian Pharaonic Empire. And every excavation mission brings new discoveries to light.
