Iberacademy Orchestra Medellin goes Europe

Side-by-side for a better future

This is the motto under which the Academia Filarmónica Iberoamericana, or Iberacademy for short, based in Medellín, Colombia, is embarking on its second tour of Europe. The young musicians of the Iberacademy Orchestra will play impressive programs under the direction of Iberacademy founder Alejandro Posada and Roberto Gonzales-Mónjas, principal conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Switzerland.

Stravinsky’s “Sacre du printemps” in Winterthur

Regular collaboration with international musicians and orchestras is a key element of the Iberacademy curriculum. Thus, an extraordinary musical project is at the very center of the current tour: A performance of Igor Stravinsky's once scandalous work "Sacre du printemps", side-by-side with the Musikkollegium Winterthur. 80 young dancers from schools in Zurich, Wetzikon and Winterthur will dance the work, originally conceived as ballet music, in a choreography by community dance choreographer and actor Josef Eder. The performance will be conducted by the Musikkollegium's young chief conductor, Roberto Gonzalez-Mónjas, who shares the artistic direction of the Iberacademy with the project's founder, Alejandro Posada. The location of this performance is also special: Halle 53 at the Sulzer Areal, which is considered a jewel among Winterthur's industrial buildings.

About Igor Stravinsky’s “Sacre du printemps”

Stravinsky's "Sacre du printemps" was premiered in Paris in May 1913 with a choreography by Vaslav Nijisky. However, the revolutionary ballet did not earn applause, but ridicule and indignation. The premiere evening ended in an uproar, as one had never heard music with such expressive force before. Although this scandal made the 31-year-old Stravinsky famous, the reaction of the audience had hit him hard. In any case, Sacre du printemps as ballet music was ahead of its time, completely surprising, new and different. Among other things, it is described as the first masterpiece of the 20th century that completely broke with the past and what was known until then.

Iberacademy and the Hilti Foundation

The young musicians studying with Iberacademy understand excellence not only as a leitmotif in music, but it also determines their entire work in and through music. Through a holistic education, that goes far beyond the mastery of an instrument, a new generation of young musicians is created. They live all aspects of being a musician and thus find a broad perspective of professional opportunities - in and through music. This also includes the ability to contribute to social change in society with their musical talent. The Hilti Foundation has supported the Iberacademy since its inception in 2011 and, as a strategic partner, makes a significant contribution to the program's further development.
