From Peru to the world's best festival stages

The Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra on its first major European tour

Salzburg – Gstaad – Lucerne. These are the places where the Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra will give concerts during the last days of August and the first days of September. They will perform together with the world-famous tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who founded the social music program in Peru in 2011, and the Spanish conductor Roberto González-Monjas.

Getting ready for stage

Prior to the concerts, a first week of rehearsals in Salzburg provides the talented and well-prepared young musicians with the opportunity to work on fine-tuning the program. Competing with the best orchestras in the world is a great challenge.

Alejandra Pino, concertmaster of the Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra during the rehearsals in Salzburg.

Alejandra Pino, concertmaster of the orchestra, enthuses: “Working with Roberto González-Monjas is fantastic. Having been an orchestral musician himself for many years, he understands everything from our perspective, and that helps us a lot to improve the interpretation.”

Gonzalo Tuesta, also a violinist, adds: “It's wonderful to have such an intense rehearsal period with Roberto and Juan Diego. It allows us to adjust perfectly to the expectations of the conductor and the soloist. We are excited, but also full of anticipation for the concerts. This tour is an incredible opportunity for us!”

For the Hilti Foundation, as the orchestra's main partner, this tour is a highlight in the partnership's history so far.

Christine Rhomberg during the rehearsals with the Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra in Salzburg.

Christine Rhomberg, who is responsible for the focus area Music for Social Change, says: “Even though we work primarily at the grassroots level in this area and offer as many young people as possible the chance for perspective and orientation through music, performances like this have a special significance: The orchestra serves as an ambassador for the entire project. All the program’s participants are proud of their colleagues who have made it into the youth orchestra and are happy that they can now represent the Peruvian program in Europe and build bridges to the established music world. Every single member of the orchestra truly is a role model and shows how far one can go with dedication and hard work. And that's what counts – in and out of music.”

Sinfonía por el Perú and the Hilti Foundation

Being part of a social music program also includes sharing your knowledge with others. Jahan is a member of Sinfonía por el Perú and also teaches others in playing the flute.

Sinfonía por el Perú is one of the Hilti Foundation’s most important programs in its focus area of «Music for Social Change», based on clear objectives, a well-thought-out strategy, and a constant striving for excellence. With a concept of collaborative and participatory learning, the young musicians not only develop their talent, but also their social skills, a sense of mutual responsibility and self-confidence that enables them to make conscious decisions at a young age. Since its inception in 2011, the program has been able to provide thousands of children and young people with an education for life, and has also been scientifically proven to positively impact their families and society.
