Sinfonía por el Perú

Despite Peru's promising economic development over the last two decades, around 70% of the Peruvian population are still self-employed in the informal sector. They live on the periphery of large cities or in remote rural areas with very limited access to land, income, education or social recognition.

In order to provide better opportunities for the next generation from these underprivileged socioeconomic classes, Sinfonía por el Perú establishes its music schools in the most vulnerable neighborhoods and regions.

Objectives

  • Strengthening and enlarging the sector of Music for Social Change

  • Empowering young people to make conscious life-choices

Project description

Sinfonía por el Perú was founded in 2011, based on the philosophy of the Venezuelan social music program El Sistema. Through music, especially through playing and singing together from an early age, the children – most of whom come from lower social classes – develop a sense of belonging,  and they consider themselves to be part of a community. This, in turn, helps to develop and strengthen positive social behavior. The ambition and the possibility to develop themselves through music often helps to improve the quality of the music they produce which also enhances self-confidence and value-awareness. In the long term, young people are able to recognize their abilities and talent which ultimately helps them to make conscious decisions for their own futures as they find their roles in society. Currently, about 10,000 children from all parts of Peru receive free musical education in orchestras and choirs.

Impact

Recent research shows a significant increase in creativity, self-confidence and academic success. Alongside this, Sinfonía por el Perú’s schools also report a notable decrease in aggressiveness, domestic violence and child labor. More specifically, the studies show a great deal of interest among youths in higher education, and significantly fewer pregnancies have been recorded amongst young women. Thanks to its methodology and strategy, Sinfonía por el Perú‘s efforts not only generate a positive impact on underprivileged  children, but also on their families and on the communities at large.
