My future in Bosnia

For over two decades, Bosnia Herzegovina has been suffering from weak economic development. Incentives for foreign investment are weak and job opportunities are insufficient. This leads to continuously high unemployment, particularly among the young generation.

Today, 63% of youths between the ages of 15 and 24 are unemployed. Most of the young population who have a higher education move abroad which, in turn, contributes to the country’s ongoing ´brain drain´.

Objectives

  • Providing more jobs for young people

  • Offering work-based learning which leads to sustainable employment

Project description

Our partner Helvetas works with public and private sectors to promote youth employment in Bosnia. Based on a defined methodology, employed young people are given the chance to participate in a learning process which provides them with marketable skills and abilities, labor market information, career counseling and job placement. The initiative also provides coaching for new start-up businesses in their go-to-market process.

The program also aims to establish a vocational training system for job profiles necessitated by the labor market. In order to achieve this, Helvetas creates a public-private partnership between the private sector, the training providers and regulatory institutions.

Impact

  • 800 young people have been integrated into the job market and 30 start-ups have been successfully launched by 2022.
