Youth Orchestra of Sinfonía por el Perú in Europe

A dream comes true

Traveling abroad and performing at major international festivals, that’s what many young musicians are dreaming of. Now, for the members of the Youth Orchestra of Sinfonía por el Perú this dream is coming true: Touring Europe for the first time, together with its founder, the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez.

Overcoming boundaries

The young musicians made their first steps in music as a child in one of the many music schools of Sinfonía por el Perú. The program, founded in 2011, aims to help young people to develop their skills through music and to grow beyond the limits which were set just by their origin. By making music together, these young people not only develop their musical skills, but also, and above all, their social skills. They strengthen their own self-esteem and sense of responsibility, gaining the self-confidence that enables them to reach out for goals – both, inside and outside of music - they would never have thought possible before.

While a large part of the program's graduates seek their professional future outside of music and continue their education in other fields, the most talented make it into the Youth Orchestra. As ambassadors of the program, they represent the idea of "Music for Social Change" in their own country, but also beyond Peruvian borders.

Invited to Europe's major classical music festivals

A smaller delegation of the orchestra has already participated in a summer camp in Lucerne in 2019 and subsequently received lessons in Salzburg from musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Now, as a complete orchestra, they are heading for the stages of the major summer festivals in Salzburg, Gstaad and Lucerne. The orchestra is accompanied by its founder, the tenor Juan Diego Flórez, whose music has delighted international opera audiences for years. For him, Sinfonía por el Perú is an opportunity to give something back to his country.

The concerts will be conducted by the Spanish maestro Roberto Gonzalez-Mónjas, the principal conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur and regular guest with numerous international orchestras. The National Youth Orchestra from Peru will be reinforced by some young musicians from the Iberacademy program in Medellín, Colombia, which is co-led by Roberto Gonzalez-Mónjas and his Colombian conductor colleague Alejandro Posada.

The Hilti Foundation has been supporting Sinfonía por el Perú since 2013 and, as a strategic partner, makes a significant contribution to the sustainable further development of the program.

Sinfonía por el Perú and the Hilti Foundation

Being part of a social music program also includes sharing your knowledge with others. Jahan is a member of Sinfonía por el Perú and also teaches others in playing the flute.

Sinfonía por el Perú is one of the Hilti Foundation’s most important programs in its focus area of «Music for Social Change», based on clear objectives, a well-thought-out strategy, and a constant striving for excellence. With a concept of collaborative and participatory learning, the young musicians not only develop their talent, but also their social skills, a sense of mutual responsibility and self-confidence that enables them to make conscious decisions at a young age. Since its inception in 2011, the program has been able to provide thousands of children and young people with an education for life, and has also been scientifically proven to positively impact their families and society.
