30 Years After Srebrenica – A Podcast From Ö1 Offers Insight

For many years, Hilti team members have volunteered in the Srebrenica region through our Engaged Beyond Business “Building Homes” initiative, helping to build houses for families in need. Understanding the history of this region makes this engagement all the more meaningful.

July 2025 marked the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, one of the darkest chapters of the Bosnian war. A recent episode of the Ö1 podcast series ‘Dimensionen’ by Austrian broadcaster ORF offers historical context and insights into the region’s ongoing challenges. It’s a powerful glimpse into life in the region three decades later, showing how memory, identity and the search for reconciliation continue to shape reality to this day.

The Hilti Foundation in Srebrenica

Our engagement in Srebrenica began in 2013 when a team member discovered a small housing reconstruction effort that aligned with our mission of enabling self-determined lives.

In 2014, we launched a pilot with 16 Hilti apprentices and employees who built two houses—an experience that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. This success deepened our collaboration with the local initiative, now called the House of Good Tones.

Since then, Hilti team members and the Foundation have jointly supported the construction of over 200 houses, offering displaced families the opportunity to return, rebuild, and reclaim their lives.
