Mobile Nature Labs Bring Biodiversity to the Classroom

Out of the gray classrooms and into colorful nature! Starting in September 2025, students in Liechtenstein from third grade primary school to third level secondary schools will have the opportunity to discover, explore, and experience biodiversity up close through the Hilti Foundation's supergut initiative. Two supergut LABS can be set up as mobile laboratories in green spaces near schools, making this possible.

"We're launching the pilot phase at Planken Primary School and will deploy the supergut LABS at Mauren-Schaanwald Primary School and Vaduz Gymnasium this autumn," explains project manager Flurina Seger. "Education is a crucial multiplier for biodiversity awareness, and children are naturally the best ambassadors for this cause. Beyond our free educational program, there's an important social dimension – we're bringing schools into nature-based learning environments that benefit the entire community."

The two supergut LABS offer impressive features. Built largely from sustainable local materials, they blend seamlessly into natural environments with their appealing design. The equipment encourages hands-on discovery – magnifying glasses, catching nets, and microscopes – while providing ample space for creative projects and collaborative learning.

Experienced supergut coaches guide school classes and teachers on-site, from initial nature immersion through pedagogical reflection to curriculum integration. "Our eight learning modules are as diverse as biodiversity itself," explains Flurina Seger. "Students can 'check snails,' use night vision cameras to track nocturnal animals, or bury cotton underwear to observe decomposition rates. Adventure and discovery are at the heart of everything we do."

The LABS saw debut at the Tatort Biodiversität event on May 22nd.

The supergut LABS reflect our strong commitment to biodiversity awareness and conservation in Liechtenstein and continue the foundation's ongoing work in this important field.
